Empowering Community Creativity: FMCT and City of Moorhead’s Build-a-Thon Transforms Spaces through Placemaking Grant
Moorhead is gearing up for a burst of creativity and community spirit as the Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre (FMCT) proudly announces its upcoming “Build-a-Ton-aThon” event, September 22-24 at Viking Ship Park in Moorhead. Made possible by a generous Placemaking Grant from the City of Moorhead, the event aims to foster community cohesion, inclusivity, and engagement while revitalizing public spaces.
Placemaking, the art of transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary community hubs, takes center stage as FMCT staff, Moorhead residents, volunteers, and local organizations unite to enhance the city’s charm and character. The Build-a-Ton-aThon showcases collaborative efforts and reflects Moorhead’s community-driven spirit. Volunteer teams will construct installations which will later be moved to pre-identified areas around the city, breathing new life into underutilized spaces and creating vibrant community gathering points that embody the essence of Moorhead.
With a legacy of community-building spanning over 77 years, FMCT is thrilled to orchestrate this dynamic event, inviting individuals from all walks of life to contribute their skills and passions. The Placemaking Grant acts as a catalyst for creating engaging installations, interactive art, and functional amenities that reflect Moorhead’s unique identity.
FMCT extends an open invitation to all Moorhead residents, community groups, businesses, and volunteers to join hands in this exciting endeavor. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
The Build-A-Ton-aThon kicks off September 22 at Viking Ship Park (near the Hjemkomst Center – 202 1st Ave N, Moorhead MN 56560):
- Friday, September 22
- Volunteer Group Night 1-4pm
- Saturday, September 23
- 10am: Opening Ceremony, Mayor Shelly Carlson will speak at the kickoff event.

- 11am-5pm: Hands-on building activities begin. Build sessions are as follows:
- 11am-1:30pm
- 2:00pm-4:30pm
- Cleanup from 4:30-5pm
- 11am-5pm: Hands-on building activities begin. Build sessions are as follows:

- Food, music, family activities & games will be available throughout the day in the park.
- Sunday, September 24
- 12pm-3pm: Builds will be finished and assembled; cleanup work will be completed.

- 3-5pm: Grand Reveal and Block Party. The newly created installations will be unveiled. The Block Party is open to the public and features food, beverages, music, and camaraderie.
